The
Alice Springs RSL Sub-Branch was chartered in 1932 with a total
of 12 members. The Sub-Branch was instrumental in having the Hill
and what is now the ANZAC Hill High School and oval granted to them
as ANZAC Reserve. On ANZAC Day 1933, the Rev. Harry Griffith suggested
a Memorial be erected on the crown of the Hill, and on ANZAC Day
1934, the then President Dudley Adamson unveiled the Memorial and
laid the official wreath.
In 1948 the Sub-Branch was required to surrender the land occupied
at ANZAC Hill Oval and sought out alternative sites to establish
an RSL Club. At the time the Sub-Branch occupied a tin hut at the
foot of ANZAC Hill. On 15 June 1948, RSL Committee Members inspected
and approved the site of the present Memorial Club. |

The
Alice Springs Memorial Club, then an ancillary of the Sub-Branch,
was given a sublease of the land in December 1950 for club premises,
with final approval secured in January 1954. The ASMC membership
expanded rapidly, and by 1960 the stage had been reached where the
non ex-service members were in control.
The ex Diggers secured their present site of Schwarz Cres at the
foot of ANZAC Hill, resolving that the new premises and club rooms
would remain as a permanent home in recognition of the sacrifices
made by all allied service personnel. |
